Performance is a marvelous theme for this edition of Drury Magazine. From violinists to sports cars, stock prices to university presidents, performance vividly describes the sights and sounds, and the execution of actions in our professional and personal lives. Most often evaluated or measured by some standard, performance can take the form of a specific act of accomplishment, the fulfillment of a commitment or the manner in which a mechanism performs.
For me, these three descriptive phrases of performance are so relevant at Drury University:
- Drury is a place of performance as specific accomplishment. Every undergraduate and graduate student, faculty member, staff person and active alum works toward specific accomplishments in every engagement at Drury.
- Drury is a place where commitments are fulfilled. Drury is committed to providing an outstanding liberal arts education to prepare our students to perform at their highest levels after graduation.
- And finally, Drury is a complex mechanism that is ultimately judged by the manner in which it performs academically, athletically, socially, spiritually and corporately.
I wanted to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to our entire Drury family—our students, faculty, staff and alumni—for the dedicated performance that you bring to task daily in keeping this institution performing at a high level.
We are in the final few weeks of our Annual Experience Fund for scholarships and financial aid, and our generous alumni, supporters and development team are all performing admirably. If you’ve donated, thank you. If not, I hope you’ll consider it, especially if you haven’t done so in some time. This is a great year to re-engage with Drury, as so many great, remarkable and affirming things are in the works.
Many of you might already be aware that great progress has been made in the early stages of three major initiatives at Drury: a powerful new academic positioning platform for the undergraduate program, a campus-wide master plan and a comprehensive campaign for Drury University culminating in our 150th celebration in 2023. The level of performance of senior staff, faculty leaders, outside professionals and alumni volunteers on these initiatives is extraordinary.
We have also experienced loss this year, with the tragic passing of an exceptional student, Wen “Ariel” Xu. She was loved and cherished by her family in China, as well as her adopted family of friends, faculty, coaches and staff here at Drury. Our deepest sympathies are with her family and friends. My sincere appreciation goes out to our students, coaching staff, student affairs team and my senior management team for their heartfelt, loving dedication in serving Ariel’s family and the broader Drury family with such dignity and care during this difficult time.
All of these things and more reflect the outstanding performance that is Drury University. I invite you to enjoy this edition of Drury Magazine (another great performance by our communications team and our many Drury contributors) and I encourage you to continue to explore the many ways you can engage in active performance here at Drury.
All my best to you,
J. Timothy Cloyd
